The Real Deal

Have You Ever Wondered... Is that certain book really good? Does that product really work? So have I. From Indie authors and musicians to local products or nationally advertised, I can't tell you the countless products I've bought as seen on TV only to find out that they don't work at my house, the book was really a bunch of hype, the music was not what I had hoped for or a movie was a yawn. If you want an honest opinion, you will find it here. Although I do lots of book reviews, I also check out lots of other products and let you know if they really live up to their ads or their hype. Stay tuned, and check in often. You never know what I'm going to talk about next.

How Would You Like to Live in Victory?

Thirty One Days of Power
Learning to Live in Spiritual Victory

by Ruth Myers with Warren Myers

The world is a messy place these days. The stress of getting through a “normal” day seems to escalate. Traffic jams, calamities, disasters, people losing their livelihood and homes, crime, war... The worries seem to multiply and the world seems an increasingly dangerous place to live.

Are you really living? Or just surviving? At the end of a typical day, you might feel like you haven't any power left. Even though most Christians understand that Satan seeks to destroy our lives and souls, it seems not quite as many know how to fight this centuries old battle.

Wouldn't it be nice to rise above the turmoil of the day and enjoy some measure of real peace? How would you like to take a deep breath and be refreshed? Where can you plug into a major power source to be re-energized?

My husband and I began reading Ruth Myers book, Learning to Live in Spiritual Victory in morning over breakfast before leaving for work. The verses feel like a cup of hot tea with a friend, warming and comforting. They began positively affecting me from the beginning of chapter one: “Father in heaven, I lift up my heart to You... “

Instead of magnifying the problems, the daily prayers and praises of this devotional point to the answer: Almighty God. I read each prayer, weighing it in my heart, reminded that God is in control and far more worthy of my attention. He is ever present, waiting for me to call upon Him.

Since we began reading the book, I sleep better at night, feel closer to God and don't worry as much. When I begin feeling anxious, I go back to reread the devotion for that day. As I draw near to end of the book, I feel as though I have put on the armor of God, equipped to live in spiritual victory.

Power Based LIfe

As I read through the table of contents to The Power Based Life by Mike Flynt, each one of the chapter headings seemed more interesting than the first. I was surprised by the first one, that talked about playing to your strengths. How different my life could have been if I had known that was even acceptable.

As I progressed through the book, some of it was less interesting to me particularly because I am not what you would consider an athlete. I’m not really into sports of any kind and struggle to maintain a work-out schedule. However, as I read, I felt encouraged to rethink some of my strategies and attitudes about my personal physical fitness, particularly after reading Sow in Health, Reap a Longer Life. Far too often I hear elderly people saying, “If I had known I was going to be around this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”

I feel like Mike’s book is a sort of physical, mental and spiritual fitness guide. I think there are principles and concepts in this book that could help anyone willing to apply them. The book was an easy read, upbeat and encouraging. He never beats anyone over the head with shoulds or oughts. His biblical references seemed to be in line with the word as I have understood it.

I found the book a little tough to get into at first because of all the sport analogies, but if you have an athlete on your hands, this would be a good choice. In spite of my lukewarm appreciation of sport, I thought the fitness aspects he covered were not only worth reading, but worth sharing.
